In short
Ten U.S. sales engineer and solutions engineer postings checked October 1, 2026 listed annual cash on-target earnings (OTE) up to $310,000. Several require senior technical or sales experience. The table links each employer's role and location. This selected sample is not a national pay ranking, and OTE depends on meeting targets.

The table is ordered by the upper end of OTE. Ties are not precise ranks. Location tiers can change the range, and upper ends are not guaranteed offers. None of these cash OTE figures includes equity.

How we selected the examples
We checked public direct-employer U.S. ads on October 1, 2026. Each role disclosed annual cash OTE in U.S. dollars. We selected one employer per row and did not turn salary-only figures into OTE.
This is not a list of the highest-paying sales engineering jobs in America. It is a transparent sample with several advanced roles. Products, territories, seniority, technical depth, and location tiers differ, so the figures are not directly interchangeable.
What sales engineers and solutions engineers do
A sales engineer or solutions engineer helps a buyer judge whether a product can solve a technical or business problem. The work can include technical discovery, tailored demos, security or system questions, proof projects, and coordination with account executives and product teams.
Titles differ by employer. Specialist roles may focus on one technical area. Principal and lead roles often handle complex buyers or guide other team members. Channel roles can support partners. Public-sector roles may involve government buying rules.
This work is not interchangeable with an entry BDR job. Many employers want technical education, product experience, engineering work, or a history of supporting complex sales. Read the duties and requirements rather than treating sales engineering as a general first step.
How geography and seniority affect the range
Some employers publish pay tiers. Scribe lists one range for Tier 1 and a lower range for Tier 2. Affirm lists one range for designated Pacific states and another for other U.S. states. The same title can therefore carry a different range based on where a candidate lives.
Seniority matters too. A lead, principal, senior, or specialist role may ask for deeper technical judgment or experience with complex accounts. The larger number does not show how hard the quota is, how much travel is needed, or whether the role matches your background.
How to compare sales engineering OTE
Ask how OTE is split between base and variable pay. Lumana disclosed a 70/30 split in the sampled role, but other teams can use different plans. Ask whether your variable pay follows your own work, the account executive's deals, a team result, or a mix.
Ask how many people in the same role reached target, how credit is shared, and what happens when a deal closes after you leave the account. Learn how many account executives you support, how often you travel, and how many demos or proof projects run at once.
For location-based ranges, ask which tier applies before comparing offers. For remote jobs, confirm approved states and expected travel. Read the tech sales salary guide for a broader explanation of base, variable pay, and OTE.
A practical path for career changers
Start by choosing a product area you can credibly learn or already understand. Read ten postings and list the repeated technical tasks. Compare those tasks with your work in engineering, implementation, support, consulting, operations, or customer education.
Build true proof. You might prepare a short discovery plan, explain a technical concept to a nontechnical buyer, or create a sample demo around a made-up customer problem. Label sample work clearly. Do not claim customer results you did not produce.
If you do not yet have the required depth, another customer-facing role may be a better first step. Our guide to getting into tech sales can help you choose from your real experience, and the cross-role OTE hub shows other kinds of sales work.
Questions to ask the hiring team
Ask which technical skills are required on day one and which can be learned. Ask how demos, proof projects, security reviews, and handoffs are divided. Learn what makes someone successful beyond helping a deal close.
Ask about quota, attainment, ramp, travel, account coverage, and the base-variable split. Ask which location tier applies and whether the role supports one segment or several. A clear answer should connect pay to specific work and goals.
